Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 31, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how ReelVotes ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and protects information when you use our voting experience for movie nights and related events (the "Service").

1. Information We Collect

When you use ReelVotes, we may collect:

  • Voting session information: A random browser identifier stored on your device so we can limit repeat voting from the same browser for the same event.
  • Voting information: The movie you vote for and details about the event you are voting in.
  • Usage data: Basic technical information such as your browser type, device type, general interaction data with the Service (e.g., pages viewed, click events). This may be collected via Firebase or your browser, along with limited network metadata used for abuse prevention.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Associate your vote with a browser identifier so the same browser cannot easily vote multiple times in the same event.
  • Record and count votes to determine results for the event.
  • Prevent duplicate or fraudulent voting.
  • Improve and operate the Service, including debugging and analytics.

3. Legal Basis and Consent

Where required by law, we process your personal data based on your consent, which you provide when you choose to use the Service and submit a vote. You can choose not to participate, but in that case you may not be able to cast a vote.

4. Data Sharing and Third Parties

We do not sell your personal information. We may share or store data with third-party service providers solely to operate the Service:

  • Firebase (Google Cloud): We use Firebase for hosting, databases, and cloud functions.
  • Cloudflare Turnstile: We may use Turnstile to distinguish real visitors from automated abuse during vote submission.
  • TMDB (The Movie Database): We fetch movie metadata such as posters and titles; your personal data is not sent to TMDB, only movie queries.

These providers process data on our behalf under their own privacy policies and security practices.

5. Data Retention

We retain voting records (browser identifier hash + chosen movie + event) for as long as reasonably necessary to administer the event, verify results, and maintain basic records, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law. We may aggregate or anonymize data for analytical or historical purposes.

6. Your Choices and Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights such as:

  • Accessing the personal data we hold about you.
  • Requesting correction of inaccurate information.
  • Requesting deletion of your personal data, where applicable.
  • Objecting to or restricting certain types of processing.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. We may need to verify your identity before responding to your request.

7. Data Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including relying on Firebase security controls. However, no online service is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security of your data.

8. Children

ReelVotes is intended for use by adults participating in events, and is not directed to children under the age of 13. If you believe we have collected personal data from a child, please contact us so we can investigate and delete it where appropriate.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted means you accept the updated policy.
